Im looking to pick up 1st class first time around, so I want to start studying now. Is there a good resource for us? With our obvious lack of focus on the military aspect of our job, there's not much focus on advancement around here (or haircuts for that matter). I know a good chunk is BMR, but I can cram that in pretty easily. When I picked up 2nd, I remember there were a lot of plant operations for multiple platforms, and seemingly random questions. Is the 1st class test the same way?

Thanks in advance.

(p.s. if the test DOES cover mulitple plant operations, how would I go about studying s9g's? O.o)

Don't they publish a bibliography that gives the references for the topics of the exam?

LOTS of information available on the BUPERS site.  I recommend you start there, which will lead you to the link above.  The first class exam is geared towards a person ready to take the next step and pick up that EWS/PPWS qual card and get started.

The 1st class exam tends focus more on paperwork, evals, leadership, and (of course) uniform regulations.  There is still a focus on technical proficiency, but less than the 2nd class exam.  As far as the S9G Reactor Plant Manual and other similar documents, there's not really a good way of getting ahold of one of those.  If you're fortunate, you can talk to a submarine guy who is (or was) on that platform.  Other than that, you're out of luck.

Remember however, that you are not competing for advancement against submarine nukes.  They have their own quotas and advancement percentages.  You do take a common exam, however.  If you come across a question like that...make an educated guess, based on what you learned at prototype.

You might also want to order a Northstar study guide (google 'northstar study guide').  They contain questions and answers for all of the non-nuke sections of the exam.  Most of us nukes are just about equal on plant ops, and the military portion will really bump up your score. I STRONGLY recommend ordering a Northstar study guide. Best of luck to you.

Going back over some of your previous posts....

Seems to me like you might trolling just a bit...

there is no way you are eligible for first class....

If I read your old posts correctly, you couldn't have been an E5 for longer then one year....due to your previous medical issues and your inability to re-enlist.  So, you'd be at least one year away from even testing for E6

And, I find it hard to believe with the attitude you portray in your posts that you would get an EP as junior E5....so, you'd be two years at a minimum away from taking the E6 exam.....

So, things to me just don't add up.

No wonder your karma is so low!

Well said. I love the "please tell me what to study" followed by the "well that's way too much to study, I don't want to work THAT hard" tone of his posts.

Speaking of resume's and inboxes...are any of you old-timers hiring NLOs?  I seem to have an acute lack of employment these days (plenty of time to look up BIBs).

edit:  Yes, I know this is off-topic and has nothing to do with the 1st class exam.  Sorry.
