Oconee Nuclear Station

Oconee Nuclear Station, located on Lake Keowee near Seneca, South Carolina, approximately eight miles north of Clemson, is a three-unit nuclear facility. Commercial operations began with Unit 1 in 1973, followed by Units 2 and 3 in 1974. The station’s three pressurized water reactors (PWRs) have a combined generating capacity of 2,554 megawatts—enough to power more than 1.9 million homes. Since beginning operations, Oconee has achieved several industry milestones, including:
Establishing the nation’s first accredited nuclear operator training program
Becoming the first nuclear station to generate 100 million kilowatt-hours of electricity
Achieving over 3 million safe work hours
Earning recognition as the second nuclear station in the United States to receive a 20-year operating license extension from the NRC (Calvert Cliffs preceded it)
