The laboratory was founded in 1949 on the former Bettis Field, named for Cyrus Bettis, and Westinghouse Electric ran it from its founding until 1998. Bettis adapted the pressurized water reactor design developed at Oak Ridge for naval use, starting with the S1W prototype, and went on to develop propulsion plants for USS Nautilus, USS George Washington, USS Long Beach and USS Enterprise. Westinghouse's Nuclear Power Division also built the Shippingport Power Plant, the first U.S. commercial nuclear power plant.
