Idaho National Laboratory (formerly the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory) covers about 890 square miles of high desert on the Snake River Plain in eastern Idaho. It lies between Arco, Idaho Falls and Blackfoot, near the town of Atomic City.

The Navy used the area during World War II to re-sleeve and test large guns, and the federal government established the National Reactor Testing Station there in 1949. Experimental Breeder Reactor I lit four light bulbs on December 20, 1951, the first usable electricity from nuclear fission. On July 17, 1955, the BORAX III reactor powered the town of Arco. The SL-1 reactor was destroyed in a steam explosion on January 3, 1961, killing three military personnel. The site became INEL in 1974 and Idaho National Laboratory in 2005.
