The laboratory began on May 15, 1946, under a contract between General Electric and the U.S. government for nuclear research, including generating electricity from nuclear energy. In 1950 the work was converted into a naval nuclear propulsion project. KAPL contributed to the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, which was launched on January 21, 1954. The S1C prototype site in Windsor, Connecticut was fully remediated in 2006, and the state declared the cleanup complete in October 2006.
