President Harry Truman authorized the site on December 18, 1950, and it was known as the Nevada Proving Ground from 1951 to 1955 and as the Nevada Test Site from 1955 to 2010. The first test, an atmospheric test at Frenchman Flat, took place on January 27, 1951. The last atmospheric test was on July 17, 1962, and the last underground test on September 23, 1992. In all, 928 nuclear tests were announced from 1951 through 1992. Nuclear rocket engines were also tested in Area 25.
