The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a deep geologic repository about 26 miles east of Carlsbad in Eddy County, New Mexico. Its disposal rooms lie about 2,150 feet underground in the Salado Formation, a bedded salt layer in the Delaware Basin, and it was built to hold transuranic waste from U.S. defense and nuclear weapons programs.

The site was moved from Lyons, Kansas, to the Delaware Basin in 1973, and Congress authorized construction in 1979. The first waste shipment, from Los Alamos National Laboratory, arrived on March 26, 1999. On February 5, 2014, an underground salt haul truck caught fire, and on February 14, 2014, a damaged waste drum released americium and plutonium. The plant reopened on January 9, 2017.
