The Barnwell Disposal Facility is a low-level radioactive waste disposal site in Barnwell County, South Carolina, about five miles northwest of the town of Barnwell. It lies next to the Savannah River Site and the former Barnwell Fuel Recycling Plant.

Chem-Nuclear Systems was first licensed by South Carolina in 1969 to store radioactive waste, and commercial disposal began in 1971 (one state source gives 1970). Chem-Nuclear was acquired by Waste Management in 1982 and by Duratek in 1998. After the Three Mile Island accident in 1979 and the federal Waste Policy Act of 1980, South Carolina repeatedly reduced the volume of waste allowed. A law passed in 2000 set June 30, 2008, as the date after which the site would close to waste from states outside the Atlantic Compact.

These granite markets sit at the back end of the ChemNuclear waste disposal site. Each is a headstone for a large clay trench containing metal drums, steel boxes, polyethylene containers, and carbon steel liners full of medical, industrial, and commercial radioactive waste. The "institutional control period" for the site is 100 years. Barnwell, South Carolina, August 7, 1983.
