Brookhaven National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory in Upton, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. It was established in 1947 on the grounds of the former Camp Upton Army base, which the War Department transferred to the new Atomic Energy Commission on March 21, 1947.

Construction of the Brookhaven Graphite Research Reactor began in 1947, and it opened in 1950. The Cosmotron accelerator came into use in 1952. The Medical Research Reactor, built in 1959, operated until 2000, and the High Flux Beam Reactor operated from 1965 to 1999. In January 1997, groundwater samples revealed tritium leaking from the High Flux Beam Reactor's spent fuel pool, and in May 1997 the contractor Associated Universities, Inc. was terminated.
