Research at the site began in 1959. On 31 March 1994, a sodium explosion occurred during the dismantling of the Rapsodie experimental fast reactor. The site was selected in 2005 as the location of the international ITER fusion project, and construction of ITER began in 2007. The Aix-Durance fault, which was linked to the 1909 Lambesc earthquake, lies nearby.
