About This Site

Calder Hall was a nuclear power station on the Sellafield site in Cumbria, North West England. It had four graphite-moderated, carbon-dioxide-cooled Magnox reactors fueled with natural uranium.

Construction began in 1953. The first reactor was connected to the grid in August 1956, and the station was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 17 October 1956. The other three reactors were connected between 1957 and 1959. All four reactors were permanently shut down on 31 March 2003, three years earlier than planned. Its cooling towers were demolished by controlled implosion on 29 September 2007, and the reactors were fully defueled in 2019.
