About This Site

?

The Elk River Reactor was a small boiling water reactor built next to a coal- and oil-fired power station at Elk River, Minnesota. The power station itself dates to 1950, and the reactor was built as an addition to that existing site.

Construction of the reactor began in 1959. It was first connected to the grid on August 24, 1963, and permanently shut down on February 1, 1968. The reactor was later decommissioned and dismantled, a process that ended in the early 1970s. The power station continued to run on coal and oil after 1968.
