Construction of Unit 1 began on 10 June 1971 and the five boiling water reactors were built over three decades, with Units 1 to 4 supplied by General Electric designs and Unit 5 an advanced design. Unit 1 entered commercial operation in 1976 and Unit 5 in January 2005. Units 1 and 2 were permanently shut down on 30 January 2009. In May 2011, after the Fukushima accident, the prime minister asked for the plant to be halted, and Units 4 and 5 were shut down on 13 and 14 May.
