The site dates from the 1970s, when it was set up with French assistance. China supplied several small research reactors there, including a 27 kW Miniature Neutron Source Reactor, and a light water subcritical reactor, a heavy water zero power reactor and a graphite subcritical reactor. On 13 June 2025, Israeli strikes damaged the uranium conversion facility and other buildings at the site.
