Construction began in 1958. The single reactor was a gas-cooled Magnox unit of British design, with turbines by C. A. Parsons and Company. It reached first criticality in December 1962, was connected to the grid in May 1963 and entered commercial operation in January 1964. In 1969 its operating temperature was lowered to limit corrosion, which reduced its output by about a quarter. It was shut down in 1987, after the referendum that followed the Chernobyl accident.
