Construction of the two 220 MW pressurized heavy water reactors began in 1976 and 1977. Unit 1 was connected to the grid on 29 July 1989 and Unit 2 on 5 January 1992. On 31 May 1993, two steam turbine blades failed in Unit 1 and the resulting fire spread to the reactor's emergency cabling, an event that came close to damaging the reactor core.
