The Erwin plant supplied fuel for the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered vessels beginning in the 1960s. In 2007 the National Nuclear Security Administration awarded the company a contract to convert 17.4 metric tons of highly enriched uranium for the America's Reliable Fuel Supply program. In May 2008 the NRC released information on two incidents from 2006 at Erwin: a leak of liquid containing highly enriched uranium, and an unmanaged accumulation point in an elevator shaft where enough uranium could have collected to form a critical mass.
