Starmet made depleted uranium munitions for the U.S. Army from the 1970s until 1999. From 1958 to 1985, manufacturing by-products, including waste solutions containing depleted uranium, went into an unlined holding basin on the property. In 1997, with Army financial support, about 8,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed from the basin. EPA proposed the site for the Superfund National Priorities List in July 2000 and listed it in 2001. The company declared bankruptcy in 2002.
