Petten is a village in the province of North Holland, in the Netherlands, and the site of a nuclear research establishment built around the High Flux Reactor (HFR). The HFR was built to give the Dutch nuclear program irradiation capacity and experience.

A contract for the reactor was signed in May 1956 with the nuclear division of American Car & Foundry, and construction began in 1958. Allis-Chalmers took over the project in 1959. The HFR reached criticality on November 9, 1961, and its power was raised in steps to 45 megawatts thermal by 1970. A reactor vessel replacement kept it shut down from November 1983 to January 1985. Conversion to low enriched uranium fuel was completed in 2006. A low-flux reactor there, first used in 1960, shut down in 2010.
