NB Power built the station, which has a single CANDU 6 pressurized heavy-water reactor supplied by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. Construction began on 1 May 1975. The station's license was issued on 21 July 1982 and the reactor went critical a few days later. It was connected to the grid on 11 September 1982 and entered commercial service on 1 February 1983. A refurbishment began on 28 March 2008, and the unit was reconnected to the grid on 23 October 2012, resuming commercial production on 23 November 2012.
