About This Site
Port Hope is a municipality on the north shore of Lake Ontario, at the mouth of the Ganaraska River in Northumberland County, Ontario. A uranium refining and conversion site there began as a radium refinery run by Eldorado and later converted uranium for reactor fuel.

Eldorado built the radium refinery in the early 1930s, and the first radium salts were produced by 1936. In the Second World War it produced large quantities of uranium oxide for the United States and the Manhattan Project. Enriched uranium was processed from 1966 to 1987, and depleted uranium metal was produced until 1992. Refining moved to Blind River in the early 1980s, and Cameco was formed in 1988 from the privatization of Eldorado Nuclear and another Crown corporation.
