The project began in 1956, and construction started on 1 January 1960. The plant had a single pressurized water reactor of Soviet design, rated at about 70 MWe gross. It first reached criticality on 11 March 1966 and was connected to the grid on 6 May 1966. Commercial power production began on 11 October 1966. The East German government shut the reactor down permanently on 1 June 1990, citing safety concerns.
