Rocky Flats was a U.S. nuclear weapons component plant in Jefferson County, Colorado, near Arvada and about 15 miles northwest of Denver. It was run for the Atomic Energy Commission and later the Department of Energy by contractors that included Dow Chemical and Rockwell International.

The plant operated from 1952 to 1992 and made plutonium pits, the fissile cores of nuclear weapons. A plutonium fire occurred on September 11, 1957, and a larger glovebox fire burned for about six hours on May 11, 1969. On June 6, 1989, an FBI and EPA raid led to the suspension of plutonium production. The plant was formally shut down in 1992, and cleanup was declared complete on October 13, 2005. Congress authorized a national wildlife refuge on part of the site in 2001.
