The company took the name Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited in 1992. Construction of the reprocessing plant began in 1993, with completion first expected in 1997. Vitrification tests at the plant were completed in November 2007. Work on the J-MOX fuel fabrication plant formally began in late October 2010. After the Tohoku earthquake of March 11, 2011, the reprocessing plant ran on backup diesel generators until grid power was restored on March 14.
