Construction began in 1963. The two A units were gas-cooled, graphite-moderated (UNGG) reactors, connected to the grid in March 1969 and August 1971 and permanently shut down in April 1990 and May 1992. On 17 October 1969 fuel elements melted in A-1, and on 13 March 1980 fuel melted in A-2. Both events were later rated level 4 on the International Nuclear Event Scale, which was created in 1994. The two B units are pressurized water reactors connected to the grid in January and June 1981.
