The plant was built with two EPR pressurized water reactors supplied by Framatome, then part of Areva. Excavation began in August 2008, and construction of Unit 1 began in November 2009 and Unit 2 in April 2010. Both units ran well behind the original schedule. Unit 1 reached first criticality in June 2018, was connected to the grid on 29 June 2018 and entered commercial operation in December 2018, the first EPR to do so. Unit 2 was connected to the grid on 23 June 2019 and entered commercial operation in September 2019.
