Tokai Unit 1, a British-designed gas-cooled Magnox reactor, began construction on 1 March 1961, reached the grid on 10 November 1965 and entered commercial operation on 25 July 1966. It ceased operating on 31 March 1998. Tokai Unit 2, a General Electric boiling water reactor, began construction on 3 October 1973, reached the grid on 13 March 1978 and entered commercial operation on 28 November 1978. A criticality accident at a fuel facility in Tokai on 30 September 1999 killed two workers.
