Construction began on 1 August 1980. The reactors were built by a consortium called the National Nuclear Corporation, with boilers from NEI and turbines from GEC. Unit 1 was commissioned on 25 May 1988 and unit 2 on 3 February 1989. In November 1999, a Royal Air Force Tornado jet crashed into the North Sea less than 1 km from the station after an engine failure. In August 2005, seaweed blocked the cooling water intake screens and both reactors were shut down.
